Who

York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority co-commissioned an in-depth piece of research with West Yorkshire Combined Authority to assess the routes to Net Zero for the regions.

What

Conducted by Element Energy and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the research set out three accelerated carbon abatement pathways across the five most polluting sectors of our economy – buildings, transport, industry, power, and land use and agriculture.

Why

York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority has a dynamic ambition to be England’s first carbon negative region – carbon neutral by 2034 and carbon negative by 2040. These five sectors will play a huge part in helping the region achieve these targets.

Impact

Through data gathered via an in-depth survey and a series of roundtables, knowledge was combined with best-practice examples and innovative models to create a list of 90 policy actions to take over the next five to ten years. Successful delivery will maximise the chance of delivering a Net Zero region by 2034 and a carbon negative circular economy in York and North Yorkshire by 2040.

What next?

These findings are now being taken a step further by the York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority, where they’re developing a regional ‘Routemap to Carbon Negative’, which will be co-owned by local authorities, public bodies, utilities and large businesses in the region. The routemap will further tailor the study findings to the region and working groups will track delivery of the report’s recommendations.
