Hull is one of four areas to secure funding for a major Net Zero heating project from the government’s Green Heat Network Fund.  

The Hull East District Heat Network has been awarded £22m to build a network which will use heat generated by the local chemical sector to provide low carbon heating to 14 public sector council buildings and industrial businesses – saving an estimated 98,000 to 126,000 tonnes of CO2 while providing local businesses and authorities with a resilient and affordable heat supply.

Heat networks supply heating and hot water to homes and businesses via heat pumps or sources from underground, manufacturing, and waste management. They help cut carbon emissions by supplying heat to multiple buildings from one source, meaning households and workplaces do not need to use their own energy-intensive heating solutions, such as gas boilers.

Heating buildings currently makes up 30% of UK emissions.   

It is anticipated that the first phase of the project will begin works during 2024. It will be operational during 2025.
