What is the Net Zero Hub?

Home » About » What is the Net Zero Hub?

The North East and Yorkshire (NEY) Net Zero Hub works with public sector organisations, their stakeholders and communities to develop fundable net zero projects and deliver local energy strategy. We exist to accelerate the region’s ambitious efforts to drive a low carbon, clean growth future.

Funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Hub is one of five across the country, all focusing on helping the UK reach Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

We do this by delivering programmes of support, sharing knowledge & learning and adding capacity at a local level.

Our small team provides support and leads engagement across the whole of the NEY region. A Net Zero Hub Manager and delivery team are based in Tees Valley Combined Authority while the Hub also funds a local Net Zero Project Manager within each of our partner areas to provide targeted localised support with delivery.

Our aims are to:

  • Attract commercial investment into projects and help to develop investment models which accelerate progress to net zero.
  • Increase the number, quality, and scale of local Net Zero projects being delivered across the region
  • Develop and support Net Zero elements to wider programmes and initiatives delivered across England
  • Support a national knowledge transfer programme to improve information sharing, training, and evaluation
  • Raise local awareness of opportunities for and benefits of local Net Zero investment

It means we’re busy. We’re busy working with public, private and voluntary organisations to talk about energy to anyone who’ll listen. From Hull and East Yorkshire to Northumberland, the Hub is responsible for:

  • Delivering energy strategy across the region
  • Supporting and accelerating the development of local and regional, low and zero carbon energy projects across 31 local authority boundaries
  • Delivering significant investment programmes such as housing retrofit and public sector decarbonisation
  • Bringing forward business cases that can attract investment in energy infrastructure
  • Sharing best practice across a national programme
  • Developing a pipeline of innovative projects to support the region’s clean growth agenda.

The NEY Net Zero Hub is one of five Hubs covering the geography of England. Our sister Hubs are based in the Greater South East, South West, Midlands and North West and we work collaboratively to accelerate the delivery of local energy projects across the country.
